Afrit was the pseudonym of Prebendary Alistair Ferguson Ritchie (1890-1954), some of whose puzzles appeared in The Listener. He was an early proponent of fairness in cryptic clueing, as set out in the preface to his book Armchair Crosswords, which includes the famous "Afrit's injunction": "I need not mean what I say, but I must say what I mean".
